I am by no means an expert but let me share a few things I have learned in my many attempts and two wins. Knowing this will help you figure out what they can take advantage of the best item and spell wise.

There is a lot of planning ahead that you need to do by swapping the lanes of the heroes. Remember only the hero that just attacked can be swapped so it takes some ring around the rosey to get people in the right places.

After they have all attacked rearranged them again before you un-pause it this make a huge difference. Very helpful for taking out large waves of really weak monsters.

Items are hard to give to the proper people until you know what they are, so always choose new items at the start so you can build a list of known effects.

This will help you out a lot late game when you have a larger library of known items and can better equip them to the right people.

If you haven't spend some time looking at the special effects of the slots the characters have for spells. If you can match up the items right you can get some really sweet effects.

Like there is a spell that makes one person invincible for 5 seconds. The rouge has a slot that makes any buff apply to the whole party so the full group gets the 5 seconds invulnerability.

If you get the luchador his stamina punch can be used on bosses to double stun them. What you do is break his stamina some other way, then power up the lucha with the lighting punch when you hit him you will do dmg like normal then the stamina drain will trigger after stunning him a second time making him vulnerable for a second attack.

The spells are locked in the slot you put them in. I think it looks fantastic for the large damage numbers and combat text, but it is a little eh for text bubbles.

I need help beating the electric pirate boss! The electric boss was a little tough. What I found worked best for me was to keep the lanes clear as possible, and whenever I could bring my rogue to the lane with the energy coil and use his 2x attack spell and it would one shot the energy coil.

This is how I slowly killed each coil as I kept balance on the stage. You only need to break the coils two times before the boss dies.

Also be careful not to attack a mob in a lane where lighting is blocking the path. This will waste your attack - This fight is all about timing.

I think thats the boss I beat in the second area and I had no idea what I was doing. It seemed like he could leave the field and then come back.

I think I just won by luck, I had the spell that gave me an extra attack without cooldown and just happened to clear the lane and then attacked and it was over.

But took me about 10 minutes to get there and I really didn't know how I won. The final boss in each run is a version of the ghost pirate thing.

He spawns mobs and usually some obstacles in each lane that have hp, are immune to most spells, and don't move. When you break the obstacles, he spawns in one of the lanes, and when you attack him he disappears and spawns more stuff in, so you repeat the process until he dies for good.

Use your hot potatoe on the boss! Make sure the cooldown is up before you knock out the fish statues. Exploring as much of the map as possible without backtracking and burning your candles will give you more gold, souls, and items to make the bosses more manageable.

The first time you take an item or spell, you'll have no idea what it does. Every run after that though, you will see what it does before you pick it up, making it easier to plan your team.

IIRC, press down meaning, press it in on the left joystick when in the area for spells. That should swap to the items the character has.

What is the progression like between playthrough? Do you only unlock characters and new item to be found or is there some kind of progression that carry over?

So my understanding of how the game works - take this with a grain of salt Ive only beaten it 3 times. Each time you beat the last elemental boss you unlock another hero, environment, and enemies.

Also you unlock new? Currently after my third playthrough I need to beat 3 bosses and on the 4th stage is now the final boss - ive yet to get to him so far.

There are new enemies as Ive noticed on level one there is a new skeleton with 7 stamina - was very surprised when my first battle after starting a new game had a 7 stamina skele a 4 stamina skele and the 2 stamina immune skele - it was a rough start to say the least.

Did you have to beat the level 3 boss that's got three skeletons with 10, 7, and 4 stamina? How the hell did you do that?

Every single time I get to that boss I can only stun two of the skeletons and the third one rushes me so fast I get rocked. Yes, this same exact thing happened to me the first time - the third guy kept rushing me so fast I didnt know what to do.

Ive only beaten it once, but it seems like the plan is pretty flawless Burn the stamina on the third skeleton as fast as possible.

Hot potato him at the start, use all your spells to burn his stamina while keeping the 2nd skeleton back as well, but focus on the third skeleton first.

Once he has no stamina left your warriors attack recharges before he reaches you so you literally keep your rogue at 1 and attack on cooldown which will burn skeleton 1 stamina before he reaches you, keep mage in lane 2 cause he will burn skeleton 2 stamina before he reaches you, and just keep your warrior in lane 3 attacking off cooldown.

I mostly ignored the top guy until I got the bottom two to points where their stamina was low enough to knockback easily.

He moves slow enough that your hot-potato or thunder PAWNCH should be recharged as he gets close to knock out all his stamina at once.

Finding very difficult but fun. Haven't won a game yet come close but have made it to second boss a couple times. Never played a rogue-like I couldn't stand tower defense type games and lumped these in with them.

Yeah, I get all that. When I get an item from a chest it doesn't appear to get placed in slot. To be honest, it seems like a start with all the same buffs every game.

Seems like rogue has 3 items always and warrior only 1. I may be a little confused from your question so forgive me if I answer incorrectly, but ill give it a shot.

So each character I 'think' starts with 1 item, which is just their main weapon. Each item afterwards goes into the small squares to the left of each character spells.

I think each character can hold 16 items. You can view these items by using your left joystick and scrolling to the small boxes on the left and pressing in on your joystick each character has their own section.

I'll check my first game tonight. Ahhhhh looking at a screen now I didn't even notice the little squares next to weapons playing in handheld mode- at my age my eyesight isn't what it was.

Do princesses auto cast their spells or does the player? When you collect enough souls in a 'single battle' you press ZR and it allows you to instantly cast a spell.

I do not think they are connected to the souls you get for unlocks. However, after you use this ability, the cost becomes 40 insteaf of I rarely need to use this, so i do not know if this increases in increments of 20 or if the cost is doubled with each use.

Just a note about stamina on enemies. If your character attacks more times than your enemies, stamina bars, any extra attack will deal damage to their HP and push them back.

The only proof I have of this that it is a spell augmentor is that I got the 5 second immunity shield in the third slot for my rogue, which states buffs apply to your whole team - and the immunity spell applied to my whole team.

Another time I had the spell in my second spell slot, with a spell in my third and the immunity spell did not apply to the whole team.

It seems pretty valid. Can't beat this shield skeleton for the life of me. It's at the point where I just start a new run if a I get Desolation because he's so frustrating to fight.

You need to use your bards water jet spell on the freeze skeleton when he's close to the boss and then blow up the boss while he's frozen. When a frozen target is attacked, stamina is bypassed and the target will take health damage and get knockbacked.

Alternatives would be to use spells with a high stamina drain to break the boss' stamina. Increased lightning-based damage the soaked target.

Saturday, March 25, Tips and Tricks: While it may not seem like a great idea to hold your gold absolutely do it, if you can always try to keep your gold above so you can always pick up a spell.

Spells, especially if you can pick up slot bonuses, are absolutely what can win you the game Consider stacking power-ups mostly with a single character sometimes, especially if they're spells and they can get you deep into that heroes slot bonuses since they get more powerful as they go.

Depending on what you're getting spreading out can usually be the plan but at times you can soup just one hero up and that can be very powerful as well but do you power up someone you consider the strongest or the weakest?!?

The further you get into the game the more you'll absolutely want to take anything that will give your hero an immunity.

Fire is probably the most crucial, probably followed by poison. As you get further into the game not just bosses but also normal enemies will get more nasty with elemental attacks.

Short of that you may want to invest in HP regen items While in the early game it may be easiest to find success by stacking a single hero heavily with all buffs and bonuses in the late game you'll accumulate a significant amount of items, to the point that you'll likely max at least one hero out.

While it can be tougher in the early game to spread things out in the later game having tuned each of your heroes may be essential to success For some fundamental elemental attacks fire, water, lightning you're going to want to ensure you've got at least one of each type of these spells in your arsenal by about the fourth boss regardless of whether they compliment your heroes.

Each of these elements has a critical use when you face late bosses. Water can expose ethereal enemies though poison will work in a pinch as well , fire can be useful for sapping health from masses of enemies if you get things going, and lightning then absolutely do devastating damage when combined with fire, but even water conducts pretty well.

Always have contingencies in place, and these types of spells are essential. There are some boss attacks in the late game that will make every bit of stamina matter and it can be a bit out of your control.

Don't get that far and then die because you turned down that gear that would have added some stamina, or don't end up having a tank or two and the hero with the least stamina dies because you couldn't control the situation.

Even if you don't have someone like the Bard who has some water attacks going on either a water attack or a freeze attack that you can melt with your fire would be helpful to keep the lanes a bit wet and to try to slow things down, buying you more time.

This can be tricky for the top lane, in particular, since your view will be blocked by monsters, flames, and carnage!

I need help beating the electric pirate boss! The electric boss was a little tough. What I found worked best for me was to keep the lanes clear as possible, and whenever I could bring my rogue to the lane with the energy coil and use his 2x attack spell and it would one shot the energy coil.

This is how I slowly killed each coil as I kept balance on the stage. You only need to break the coils two times before the boss dies.

Also be careful not to attack a mob in a lane where lighting is blocking the path. This will waste your attack - This fight is all about timing.

I think thats the boss I beat in the second area and I had no idea what I was doing. It seemed like he could leave the field and then come back.

I think I just won by luck, I had the spell that gave me an extra attack without cooldown and just happened to clear the lane and then attacked and it was over.

But took me about 10 minutes to get there and I really didn't know how I won. The final boss in each run is a version of the ghost pirate thing.

He spawns mobs and usually some obstacles in each lane that have hp, are immune to most spells, and don't move.

When you break the obstacles, he spawns in one of the lanes, and when you attack him he disappears and spawns more stuff in, so you repeat the process until he dies for good.

Use your hot potatoe on the boss! Make sure the cooldown is up before you knock out the fish statues. Exploring as much of the map as possible without backtracking and burning your candles will give you more gold, souls, and items to make the bosses more manageable.

The first time you take an item or spell, you'll have no idea what it does. Every run after that though, you will see what it does before you pick it up, making it easier to plan your team.

IIRC, press down meaning, press it in on the left joystick when in the area for spells. That should swap to the items the character has.

Once he has no stamina left your warriors attack recharges before he reaches you so you literally keep your rogue at 1 and attack on cooldown which will burn skeleton 1 stamina before he reaches you, keep mage in lane 2 cause he will burn skeleton 2 stamina before he reaches you, and just keep your warrior in lane 3 attacking off cooldown.

I mostly ignored the top guy until I got the bottom two to points where their stamina was low enough to knockback easily. He moves slow enough that your hot-potato or thunder PAWNCH should be recharged as he gets close to knock out all his stamina at once.

When I get an item from a chest it doesn't appear to get placed in slot. To be honest, it seems like a start with all the same buffs every game.

So each character I 'think' starts with 1 item, which is just their main weapon. Each item afterwards goes into the small squares to the left of each character spells.

I think each character can hold 16 items. You can view these items by using your left joystick and scrolling to the small boxes on the left and pressing in on your joystick each character has their own section.

Man, what ever happened to instruction books lol. Don't want to give you wrong information. I am honestly not sure. I always seem to forget to use my ZR spells - which probably isnt good, but I cannot comment on wether or not these take away from your end game souls.

I do not think they are connected to the souls you get for unlocks. However, after you use this ability, the cost becomes 40 insteaf of I rarely need to use this, so i do not know if this increases in increments of 20 or if the cost is doubled with each use.

When I say pause; I mean the soft pause that the game allows you to do by pressing L shoulder button. When the game is soft paused you can see enemy stamina and strategize what to do.

Enjoying Has Been Heroes, especially for the price, but the treasure chest bundle of shovel knight is an amazing bundle of world class platforming.

Haven't played much HBH yet, and it seems quite good, but it's hard for me to not point out how fantastic Shovel Knight is. They're very different games though.

I guess I would say SK is more accessible and pretty much any type of gamer should enjoy it, where HBH might be more to certain people's taste than others, so isn't as safe a bet.

Mine is usually full or I'm dead so I hadn't noticed. I hope to survive a close call some day. As you get better, you'll notice actually that you can actually take a few hits, but you have to be aware of who's more likely to do more damage.

Just a note about stamina on enemies. If your character attacks more times than your enemies, stamina bars, any extra attack will deal damage to their HP and push them back.

However, if you deal equal number of attacks to the stamina bars, you will stun them, which gives you the opportunity to combo the same enemy and permanently remove one stack of stamina.

They touched on this briefly in the tutorial but the tutorial is over quick. Is there a setting or something for rumble? I read it supports HD rumble, but when i play it feels like it barely rumbles at all.

Do we know exactly how spell slot bonuses work? But some like the Increase Lighting arc range in slot 2 implies to me that it is a passive bonus for the hero and not a spell augmentor.

The only proof I have of this that it is a spell augmentor is that I got the 5 second immunity shield in the third slot for my rogue, which states buffs apply to your whole team - and the immunity spell applied to my whole team.

Another time I had the spell in my second spell slot, with a spell in my third and the immunity spell did not apply to the whole team.

I will admit I really have no idea what a "roguelike" is- I don't think I've ever played one. The main characteristic of a roguelike is that you go on individual "runs" on randomly generated levels.

You pick up items and stats as you go, sometimes not knowing what they do and figuring them out by trial and error. When you die, that run is over, and you start another one.

You gain experience in prediciting outcomes and resource management from run to run, and you get closer to "winning" as your skill increases, but it might take many runs to "git gud".

Pure roguelikes are tougher to get into, because every run truly is starting from scratch. Most games people refer to as roguelikes are actually roguelites.

The distinguishing factor is that you do make general progression from run to run. You unlock new items to use, new characters to use, new levels and enemies to fight through.

There are active goals to pursue, and every time you think you beat the game you usually are just opening another door to a greater challenge.

They definitely aren't for everyone, but they are IMO one of the best genres to play. They are easy to pick up and play for a short time or settle in for a multi-run long session.

They scratch that itch of progression and achievement by offering varying levels of goals to pursue, and often unlock many items just by dying.

They are satisfying to defeat with an overpowered item run or with sheer skill. Binding of Isaac is personally my favorite.

Has Been Heroes is really good though, I'd keep it if I were you. You're probably better off returning it then. You don't even know if you like that kind of game and as far as roguelikes go this isn't one of the better ones.

I would personally never recommend BoI to a beginning roguelike player. Personally, I'd recommend Enter the Gungeon as a first roguelike.

FTL is also good once you get the hang of it. Feels more like HBH than the other's too due to its pausey-strategic gameplay. I would recommend it.
